Child Care Info & Referrals

You want to find a child care program that will provide the very best care for your child. Studies show that 90 percent of a child’s brain development occurs before age five. The people who help care for your child are also those who help shape your child’s mind. Children who receive quality child care enter school with better math, language, and social skills. These skills give children the start they need to succeed in school and in life. Fortunately, resources are available to help parents make better child care choices for their children.

In Iowa, Child Development Home Providers and Child Care Centers that participate in the Quality Rating System program, referred to as QRS, demonstrate to parents and to the community their commitment to the health, safety, and development of the children they care for as well as their own professional development.

When you visit a child care program, ask if they participate in QRS. What is their rating? Do they have a national accreditation through a program such the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)? Do they regularly participate in training opportunities? Do they have written policies and procedures?

It is important your provider sees him or herself as a professional. We look to professionals for help in almost every aspect of our lives. We see doctors and dentists, hire contractors and landscapers, consult with advisors, and get our hair done by licensed stylists. Child care should be held to the same standards. Choose the very best care for your child. Choose a professional provider who is registered and who participates in QRS.
