Dubuque County Early Childhood (DCEC), a nonprofit organization, supports healthy and successful children. Founded in 1999, the organization is a community leader supporting collaborative efforts and family resources for local children age birth to five. All efforts are accomplished through partnerships with other entities and citizens in the community.
Together... we can build our community, so all young children are ready to succeed in school and throughout their lives.
To achieve goals for early childhood, DCEC does the following:
- Gathers broad community input.
- Educates the public.
- Serves as a clearinghouse for information.
- Provides leadership.
- Promotes collaboration to ensure efficient use of community resources.
- Focuses on outcomes and community indicators.
Part of Early Childhood Iowa
DCEC is one of many Early Childhood Iowa areas across the state. This initiative was created by legislation to encourage a partnership between communities and government. The emphasis was to help communities improve the well being of families with young children by identifying needs and solutions. Target outcomes include the following:
- Healthy children
- Children ready to succeed in school
- Safe and supportive communities
- Secure and nurturing families
- Secure and nurturing child care environments
Local Priorities and Results for Children
DCEC endorses the state outcomes, sets local priorities, and facilitates results for area children. Based on an assessment of community needs and resources, here are DCEC’s current priorities:
- Quality community services
- Family success skills
- Early nurturing and learning
- Safe and secure relationships
- Healthy development
To address these priorities, DCEC annually supports over 6,000 children in this county through preschool scholarships, family support programs, early health services, grants/professional development for child care providers, parent resources, book drives, reading days for children, Kids Expos, and more.
